Hi all, I am a novice acupuncturist from B.C. Canada and my name is Dona. I have this question regarding the use of Bl-40 weizhong. It is frequently causing an electric sensation to the patients which is sometimes quite alarming... I wonder, is this natural or it happens only to me? How can I avoid this from happening?

Greetings Dona and welcome. Yes, this is unfortunately a common occurrence in the use of Weizhong, but not only Weizhong. It also frequently happens using P-6 Neiguan, Sp-6 Sanyinjiao, K-3 Taixi and other points. Using such points that ride on top of a major nerve trunk, calls for a slow needle insertion and extra care. Usually, if the limb is not stretched the electrical shock sensation may be avoided. When you flex your patient's leg by putting a thin pillow below his/her shin before treating Weizhong, may help avoiding this unpleasant sensation. When the limb is flexed, the nerve trunk is more sensitive to stimuli and becomes somewhat more elevated towards the skin level. This applies also to other points that frequently have this reaction.
