I have started to treat 2 patients who both have had spinal stenosis surgery 10 years ago. I have only given them 2 treatments each and both have complely different results.
They both have hip pain, and pain along the lateral aspects of the lower leg along the calf muscle on the GB meridaian.
One patient is grossly over weight with no results, and the other is thin with good results up until recently. He called me to say that his pain is now worse than before, but this happed aswell when he tried a Chiropractor. Both do not want to go through surgery again.
Any one have any experience treating this typ of condition./
Thanks

Hello Anonymous. Spinal stenosis with sciatica as you describe, may need up to 20 daily sessions of acupuncture. Proficient needle technique is of utmost importance here, and this can not be conveyed satisfactorily by corrspondence, of course. Both you and your patients must be very patient because steady results may begin only after 8-12 consecutive sessions. I am not discussing here point selection, as this issue is self evident, just follow the route of the involved meridians and apply deep needling to the points on the lower Dumai, and/or their Huato points. If you have some experience with this technique, direct (scarring) moxibustion may resolve this condition much faster than acupuncture alone.

The most important local points for lower back pain are those of the bladder. These are B-23/ 25/ 26/ 27. For spinal stenosis, points on the Du, such as Du-4/ 3 with deep insertion and clear Deqi propagation is very important. Also tender (Ahshi) points are very important. Those are usually the Huato of Du-3 and the neighboring points.

Hi, I am really interested in any results you got from your treatment of
patients suffering from spinal stenosis. How effective was acupuncture?
Did you stay with the huatojiaji points or did you vary treatment? I would be really interested in any thoughts you have on this.

Hi Nick. Please note the above correspondences. Acupuncture is very much effective both in spinal stenosis and slipped disc. Treatment should be varied according to the patient's response. If you feel that the Jiaji points have better effect than bladder points, you should prefer them. Not every patient reacts the same to the same points. As said above, I usually find Du points with a strong stimulus to react best to this specific syndrome, in most cases.

Yes Richard, this condition can and SHOULD be treated by acupuncture. Since your pain and numbness are mild, I suppose that the treatment can cure you from this problem. As you can see, there is a considerable amount of correspondence on this issue here as well as elsewhere on this forum about tangent and related disorders. If you run a search you can easily locate those.
