Many points may treat this problem. Main points are located aroung the thyroid, such as: St-9 and 10, Ren-22 and Li-18. Using these local points need to have clear deqi in the thyroid area. Most of the distant points are located on the Sj and Ht/Pc channel. These may be P-7, H-5/7 and Sj-10 etc. In any case, a diagnosis must be made according to T.C.M and not W.M concepts. Otherwise the treatment will not hit the core of the problem. If you detect a phlegm-fire condition, prefer the use of Ren-22 and St-40, or, if there is a K. Yin deficiency add K-7 Ren-20 and so on.

Thank you for this answer. Can you also recommend a herbal formula for hyperthyroidism?

There are quite a few, depending on the underlying syndrome (as always with TCM). Not long ago I used this one on a young woman presenting with a hyperthyroidism of 6 months. She felt a throbbing pulse on her neck (no enlargement of the thyroid was detected), lassitude and weakness. She had a deficiency type of hyperthyroidism. The prescription I gave her brought back to normal all her blood test components relating to the thyroid functioning:
Herb Dosage
Zhi gan cao 12 gr
Ren shen 4
Gui zhi 6
Sheng di huang 32
Mai men dong 7
E-jiao 6
Sheng jiang 6
Da zao 20 pcs (equivalent)
Chuan xiong 4
Chai hu 3

This was prepared as a powder. I suggest that you refer to this prescription only as guideline.

Talking of thyroid disorders. I suffer with myxoedema (hypothyroidism) and although on mediation of thyroxin still have some unpleasant side effects such as puffy eyes, brain fog, cfs, sluggishness, water retention. I also have some food intolerances but my main concern is poor memory and an inability to concentrate. With two members of my immediate family suffering with severe alzhimers disease you may understand my concern. Any suggestions on how to self treat Dr. Smuel would be really appreciated.
Thank you

Self treatment in this case is irrelevant. Your better option would be to take a course of acupuncture trewatment by a specialist, or a herbalist. I would recommend an acupuncturist if you can find a real good one.
