Hi,
In our warm country increased amount of birthmarks is not a rare thing. But they can be dangerous as themselves or as signs of something that happens inside the body.
So what is the position of Chinese medicine about this matter, when to worry and when not?
Thank you,
Elena

As a rule, birthmarks is not a dangerous phenomenon. It may become a threat to health when a birthmark gets infected, sun burnt, scratched or otherwise irritated. Sometimes even a surgery by a dermatologist in order to remove it may pose a danger of activation of latent cancerous cells. When birthmarks get inflamed, change their color, exude puss, cause pain or itchiness suddenly this indicates an energetic change of its character. This is the time when treatment is indicated.

Birthmarks often tell a stosy about the qi profile which prevailed at birth. A common birthmark is on ST 8, and the color is brownish, black-brown. One would read some kind of a Heat situation in the ST channel. Another common blemish is almost on GB 30, and as often brown or dark brown signifyimg Heat in the yang of Wood. As birthmarks are prenatal, the cause is an offshoot of parental qi which was in disharmony. Theoretically a smoking mother would have Heated Dry LU qi, which could be transferred to the child when it was being made. The child has a Dry Metal, and this aggresses Wood at the yand particle to leave its mark as Heat. It is hard to imagine these meaning nothing, in which case should have been no mark wahtsoever.

As you can see from my reply above, when a birthmark starts to cause pain or exhibit other changes, it should be investigated. I suppose that the right thing would be to go and check your birthmark with a dermatologist. If, after a biopsy, there seems to be no malignancy, there are Chinese herbal applications that can be used in order to bring it back to normalcy.
