Shalom,

Is it safe according to chinese medicine to have a vegetarian diet, to refrain from milk products, and to have the protein intake from eggs only (plus protein from grains and vegetables of course)

Chinese medicine advocates a balanced diet composed of vegeterian food and meat as well. This rule may be changed and tailored to a specific individual in view of specific health problems or other considerations. People who practice asceticism, for instance, Taoist, Buddhist, etc., refrain from meat, and so it has been in ancient times. Yet, Taosits who did so, replenished their diet with herbs and nuts and fish (not always) and eggs. Milk products is of no significance at all.

Hi Shmuel,
I am a bit puzzeled by the "Balanced diet" approach. It is too similar to the western approach with all it's ailments.
I wonder what were the Taoists motives behind refreining from meat. Were they mainly spiritual or health related as well (can mind and body be seperated ??)
I somehow feel (and I am really not sure) that digesting meet has energetic consequenses.

Regards
Ron

A balanced diet in Ch.med terms relates to Yin and Yang, hot and cold, solid and liquid etc. There are quite a few books on the market on the subject of diet according to Ch.med., if you are interested in the topic.
Refraining from meat was deeply rooted in spirituality in ancient times. Also in Judaism and Islam, when people were in religious asceticism there was the habit of complete fasting or refraining from rich and very nutritious food. The idea behind this was doublefold. The first was because of moral perceptions that killing of animals is forbidden for those who wanted to reincarnate into a higher stage. The second, that one can not really become an ascetic and enlightened lest he/she relinquish the pleasures of mundane life and immerse only in spiritual and physical asceticism. Physical absteminousness and fasting was considered a necessity in order to achieve a higher state of consciousness. In addition, as you say, in many cultures the eating of meat - and sometimes raw meat and/or internal organs or the drinking of blood, was definitely associated with the attainment of mundane or beastly force, very far from spirituality. Yet, Ch.med. holding that internal organs are associated with personality qualities, such as liver & gallbladder with resolution and courage, spleen with some mental properties such as the ability to concentrate and so on, has advocated in past times the consumption of these organs (in different types of cooking or along with the appropriate herbs) in order to foster these qualities in a person deficinet in these personality qualities.
