Shmuel,

I have a 31 yo lady who has recurrent low back pain. She gets spinal manipulation 3 times per week and acupuncture PRN. She gets pressure pain at KI 11, KI 16, GB25, GB 26, and at the umbillicus. Her tongue is depressed at the root, is pale pink, has a slight white coating at the root, swollen in the middle, and is wet.

I have found that she responds best to her KI and UB being needled, usually just the source points. Then the LBP comes back the next day. I ten treat the PC and SJ points, the source points and the water points, and it stays away for a while.

While trying to figure out an herbal prescription to give her, I found out that she has not been taking her supplements regularly like she is supposed to and she said that she needs something once per day that she can take with her birth control pills.

I remembered that you said that the birth control pills can harm the kidneys and the liver. do they deplete jing? Do they cause dampness?

What can I do to convince her to get off those pills? I'm not the MD who prescribed them, how can I take her off of them?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Eric. It is true that birth control pills, as much as all hormone based medications, harm the kidney qi. The pain that your patient gets, resembles the pathology of the Daimai, which is dependent on kidney qi. Thus, in my opinion you need to divide each treatment in two. The first, treat the Daimai with points such as G-41/ G-25-28 plus Ren-4 and 6 in deep puncture. Next, turn her over and use points B-23---> 25 and Ahshi points on her lower back. This should better be done daily, or every other day, until her symptoms are much better.
Along with that, you can explain to her the pathogenesis of hormonal therapy as affecting adversely kidney qi. Point to her the fact that only recently western medicine has discovered the hazards of hormonal therapy in menopausal syndrome, a fact that has been known to Ch. med. practitioners for many years. This too can cause cancer and other diseases by the same mechanism, i.e., the depression of kidney qi due to unnecessary hormonal treatments. Even the IUD is much better in this respect than the BCP. Hope this helps.
