I know that there are many herbs that are being used both in Western herbalism and Chinese medicine. Yet, in many occasions they differ in their clinical indications. How come ?  |

First of all, because the indications terminology in Chinese is totally different from that in the Western herbology. Chinese terminology uses indications such as Wind-Heat or Fire-poison for the herbs and tailors the list of symptoms/illnesses to these patterns. Western herbology indicates the herb directly to a specific disorder or symptom. Also, the energetical attributes to an herb in Chinese herbology aids in its combination with other herbs for a specific energetic disorder according to an established diagnosis. It doesn't mean necessarily that also its symptomatic indications are also taken in consideration for this combination. In Western herbology, the symptomatic indications of an herb are predominant for its combination with other herbs. |
