In many various texts I have read that one should avoid puncturing this point. Yet, in many other places this point is recommended for use for chest pain, asthma, cardiac diseases and more. What then, use it or avoid it?

It is true that some texts in the West recommend using this point only by moxa. If I recall correctly these texts are all based on the heritage of Soulie de Morant. Yet, in modern China, as well as from the experience of many acupuncturists including myself, this is a very strong and effective point which is used by needling for many disorders. I would also add that there have been recorded very few accidents in the use of this point. If this point is not punctured in a slanted angle, in some ocassions people may have a hole in the sternum right beneath the point. A perpendicular insertion may thus puncture the heart and cause death. Otherwise, I see no problem in the use of this point.
