Dear Dr. Halevi,
I wanted to lower my blood pressure for a life insurance exam (BP, urinalysis, and blood panel) so I found in "The Web That Has No Weaver" that Hegu and Waiguan can lower blood pressure by vasodilation and Neiguan can raise blood pressure by vasoconstriction. How does this work? I know the general characteristics of these points, ie Hegu clears wind and heat out of the channel and regulates the Large Intestine etc... But are there any other mechanisims showing why these work, does clearing heat lead to vasodilation, etc...?
Thanks,
Eric Waltemate D.C.
P.S. Earlier today one of my patients came in because he was sent home from work because his BP was too high. Before I needled those points his BP was 180/110. After tonifying Hegu and Waiguan every 5 minutes for 15 minutes his BP dropped to 130/90, and he felt much better.

The topic of hypertension has been already discussed on this forum if you wish to delve deeper. I am afraid that looking at this issue by assigning that or other point to treat hypertension symptomatically, will usually not yield good results. Waiguan and Hegu (as well as other points) may produce the opposite effect, depending on your needle manipulation technique. As discussed under other topics on this forum, the issue must be approached in a systemic view rather than symptomatically. As for your patient, sometimes relaxing for 15 minutes on the couch and having somebody treating you will produce the same rsults, as high blood pressure is unquestionably mood related in many occasions.
