It is not easily cured, that's for sure, Boaz. The strategy must be as follows. First, you need to address the problem by ear points needling as if it was an addiction, preferably also with low voltage electrical stimulation on the EPTs. Choose Shenmen, stomach, hunger and CNS points on the ear.
Along with this you need to explain to her in very clear words the consequence of the damage she is inflicting upon herself. For this, use the logic of Chinese medicine by very simple words and explanations.
In the same time, you also need to nake a differential diagnosis and treat it by body acupuncture. It is uaually a Qi stagnation of the stomach (rebellious Qi) along with severe Qi deficiency of the Sp. Yet, you need to assess which is the most predominant of the two and apply the treatment accordingly. Of course, other patterns may be involved in the same time and they also must be addressed. It is very important that you promise to the patient that if and when she starts eating normally (according to your guidelines, of course), and if she will gain weight because of that, you will apply Ch.med. techniques in order to reduce her weight again. This is after all their main concern.
The combination of harmonizing the patient's digestive system by body acupuncture and, in the same time, treating the obsession by EPTs, usually gives the best results.

thanks,
What about body weight, since it is her ( and many other patients ) main concern, how do you lower body weight. Tonifying Sp/St, doesn't seem to work too well for me. I try using pts. such as Sp. 3,4 8,9, St 44,40,37,36,25 Co. 4 ,Cv 9,12,6. With aditional ear pts such as St. shen men , sub cortex.
The results are not too good,( though a feeling of less craving for food has been observed).
Is there special technique?
In books I see that they address obesity usually to sp/kid yang xu, but in clinic (especially in hot climate Israel), I rarely see this yang xu.
( feeling of cold, pale swolen tongue, diareah etc.)
thanx

I usually don't treat this problem at all, unless there is some detectable metabolic disorder that causes other problems besides the weight gaining. In any event, the best points for weight control are ear points. Choose among the st/ shenmen/ sp/ pylorus/ SJ/ mouth/ hunger/ s.ctx etc. the most sensitive points among them and embed the needles for several days. Giving the patient a strict regime is very important of course, but most of them do not keep to it too long.

thank you,
When do you think ear pts are better to use than body pts and viceversa. What disorders are better treated with ear pts?
thanks
Boaz

This is actually up to every doctor's personal adherence and predilection. Some doctors are trained to use the ear as their preferred treatment modality, and others the body acupuncture. I usually treat the ear only in the case of obsession or a peculiar craving or addiction. I also use the ear in cases where I can not access a particular body region for acupuncture. This may be due to a plaster (cast), a heavily bandaged limb or even a pregnant woman with a severe bachache that can not lie prone. Still, I have seen people who react marvellously to ear acupuncture for peractically any sort of problem. As for my personal preferences, I am better off with a technique that I am in full control of the needles and the possible outcome of a treatment. Ear acupuncture will usually not give you that much.

I would like to know if acupuncture can be used in the treatment of bulimia. If it is, I'd like to know of an acupuncturist in the Sacramento CA area that is good.
Please respond.
