Dear Forum ,my brother in law is a physician who was diagnosed with "algodystrophy of the hip", i did not have a chance to see him yet since he is in a different state, but i talked to him over the phone , he is complaining of pain that started on putting weight on the foot , pain is in his hipare , medially in vicinity of ST 30 , LIV 12 but also diffuse , mri was suggestive of algodystrophy =RSD hip .Is there any good acupuncture protocol that assist people with such a thing , he was advised not to use his legs for 2 months and in my opinion that by itself will lead to dystrophy .Please assist , i am planning to fly to meet him next week and hopefully to asist him with acupuncture, i have no training in herb at all , now his pain is severe enough to be at rest without weight bearing , and waking him at night , please advise.

Look you are right 2 months of rest will give you atrophy.

Use the ear hip points with electro stimulation.

I hope there will be other suggestions.

This too (see my previous post today to simon's thread) needs to be differentiated according to Chinese med. methods. Above all, see what meridian is basically involved there, most often the GB. If this is the case, use:
G-41, G-29, G-30, St-31, and G-34 as the basic formula. This problem needs rest, as suggested, accompanied by very gentle physiotherapy while resting. Use deep insertion in G-29 until there is a distinct Deqi around the point and downward. You may apply electrical stimulation to points around the hip joint, or moxa and cupping, especially on G-29. Sometimes, blood cupping on G-29 proves very helpful. In any event, such a problem needs a daily treatment and an extraordinary needle handling in order to relieve the pain and heal the joint.
Just remember that this is a basic formula. If you detect a Ki. deficiency (which often occurs in hip joint diseases) apply points such as B-23. If the liver is in stagnation, drain the Gb points on the same limb, and so forth.
