A friend of my is currently undergoing treatment for impotence problems, mainly a problem with sustaining an erection. He is being treated with acupuncture and moxa on BL23 and some other point which he cannot recall. He is also being treated with cupping on BL23, B24, and I believe B20 and B18. I might be wrong about the last 3 points, namely because the cups used were quite large and the point marks seemed to have moved a little from one treatment to another.

He has been undergoing treatment once a week for the past 4 weeks.

Unfortunately he is noticing that he is actually feeling tired and drained after the treatment, with a sense of draining of energy from the genetical organ. He also noticed that during the day or two following treatment, he was not waking up with an erection. And at times this problems seemed to persist longer

He has asked the doctor treating him to give him a more accurate diagnosis to find out if there were problems with other organs, especiallly the heart, spleen or liver. The doctor stated that he could only check his pulse and said that it seemed ok. I find this form of diagnosis a little strange and incomplete.

My friend is almost 40 years old. He has been undergoing a very long stressful period. So he has had fears and quite some overpensiveness to deal with.

I was wondering whether he should carry on treatment with the said doctor or whether it is wiser for him to seek treatment elsewhere.

Also, is there anything which could be done at home in terms of cupping, auricular therapy (massage/seed pellets/magnetic pellets), moxa or guasha, kindly advise.

Thanks

Age of 40 is too premature for sexual dysfunction of this kind, and there is almost always a trackable underlying physical or emotional cause. I am not going to enter this, as it is beyond the scope of this forum to diagnose such conditions by correspondence (he can email me privately if he so wishes BTW). In any event, the acupuncture formula that this practitioner is applying is not going to help your friend. The basic formula to treat erectile problems, should look more like this:
P-6 or Li-4 (depending on the diagnosis)
Sp-6 alternating with Liv-5
Ren-4/ Ren-6
(with or without moxa - again depending on the condition at hand).
This is only a basic prescription which needs to be tailored and adjusted to a specific patient according to a professional diagnosis. When the diagnosis is clear, you can also prescribe a patent formula, or raw herbs to deal with the problem. Otherwise, treatment usually goes astray.

Diagnosis is always important and a forum is a difficult place to do it.

These factors differentiate the syndrome.
Anxiety,
Depression
Repression
Any Urinary abnormalities colour and frequency.
Any digestive abnormalities - what colour tongue?

These are key differentials to look for.

From my understanding of acupuncture the core of it is traditional 5 element yin yang.
That means an Understanding of the use of distal points as Shmuel has demonstrated with his answer. Going in - like a bull at a gate is not the best acupuncture. Acupuncture is more than chiropractic that confines itself to paravertebral pooints only.
Another important aspect of traditional training is in closing the points after treatment to prevent loss of Life Force.

Assess your treatment on these criteria. Make your practioner work for you to justify each and every procedure - after all it is your Life.

Jan.
