My Dad is a patient of Slipped Disc since 1999. It has been painful for him ever since (in hip and leg) , however, in past six months the pain has increased a lot. Doctors have been advising to avoid a surgery until he can though now the as the pain is getting worse, he is considering to have an operation. One fear is that- once we were told that in such a surgery, the patient stands at a risk of paralysis. How true is this? Second, how successful are such surgeries.
Thanks & Regards,

Shubhra

Slipped disk, sciatica, lower back pain - all respond extremely well to acupuncture, when done correctly. In most cases there is no need for surgery. Surgery does not always yield good results, and even when it does, all symptoms may recur after several months. This said, it also has its hazards - as you have mentioned.
You may need to find a practitioner with experience in treating such problems. When the case is very severe and prolonged, such as in your father's case, I tend to treat it by direct moxibustion, which is also scarring the skin, but very very effective. You may find details about this procedure in this forum or on the internet.
