Depression and acupuncture. Major depression, depression which has been going on for a long time. Some have such negative beliefs about themselves. Antipressants and CBT have a good outcome. I have treated depression but those cases were sort off a one off event( someone dying in the family, grief, loss of jobs ect. I am talking about the people who went throught the system. Any thought on that one. Can you lift people's self esteem with acupunture. Ina

Well, this is a tough one. I suppose a good practitioner can do this. I have treated many times in the past people suffering from depression for many years. Sometimes you can cure that, especially if you can find a clear-cut linkage between the depression and a workable energetical recognized syndrome. If you do that successfully, and if you point out to your patient that this depression is a mere physiological-energetical imbalance, you may be successful in rebuilding that patient's self seteem. The point is, that most of these patients get entangled in other people's ideas about them. Their families, which have lost their patience for them, their doctors who think that their psyche is severly damaged, and even themselves who often think that they can never get cured. Now, if you come with a totally different approach, and "prove" to them that the only problem is their liver which has a stagnant energetical activity because they drink coffee too much, this makes a great difference. Moreover, if you treat them in a way that they actually feel much better after a short period, well, now you have gained their optimism and trust. Just imagine what such a person thinks, wow, all these years and nobody has succeeded in diagnosing my problem... nothing is actually wrong with me except of my liver... This person is already half way out.

I was reading about the idea of depression is based in King Wen, where Yin and Yang balance eachother. Depression occurs as the result of breaking away of energy upsetting the balance between them. In Man, the Kidneys control the Water Principle and the heart controls the fire principle. mental health is the balance between the will (Zhu) and Shen. This corresponds to the fire?water balance, the essence of Shao Yin. This idea was developed by Dr. van Nghi. I like to know more about Dr.van Nghi any idea. I also had in my notes that spl1, slp4,st 36,st 41 is often used for yin depresssion. This treatment comes from the Ling Shu chapter 22. Any idea where i can find the lIng Shu thing!! I would love to get my hands on some interesting acupuncture stuff , regarding using acupuncture in mental health. Anything you can recommend!Ina

You may buy a translation of the Ling Shu or any other book of the classics on the internet from Bluepoppy.com or from other internet based Chinese medical books stores. If you search through Google.com you will surely find it. Depression may come from many etiologies. It may be of Xu or Shi nature. Whether it is from deficiency of blood or stagnation of Qi, the main cause is a knotted circulation. This knotted circulation often involve the PC or the Liv meridians, hence most of the physical symptoms manifest at the chest, throat, vertex or temples areas. There is plenty of written material available regarding depression, and it usually responds very well to acupuncture, especially when the problem is relatively new. Take the post delivery depression, for instance. It is attributed to a Qi stagnation following the loss of Qi and blood during the delivery. This is therefore a Xu type of depression and is extremely responsive to acupuncture. Most women recover after 2-10 treatments without adhering to modern psychology at all.

Thanks for the info.Depression is difficult to treat when it has been going on for years!even with modern psychology , I have tried EFT , emotional freedom therapy, which works well for depression if it is relatively new. But even when it is long term hard to treat. Ina

Karen, PMS including depression has excellent results with acupuncture. Also Ch. herbal medicine is very effective in treating this problem. Why don't you go and see a professional Ch.med.Dr. A.S.A.P.?
