Can you tell me if this treatment would have any promises in curing vitiligo?
Thank you.

Well, promises no, but occasionally success, indeed yes. Younger people tend to get cured from this disorder much better than adults who have had the problem for a long time. Vitiligo is treatable by both Chinese herbs and acupuncture. When the disorder is associated with bowel problems such as ulcerative colitis, crohn or other, the success rate seems to be higher, especially in younger patients.

My husband is a vigiligo patient. I have four years old daughter and recently I found she has 1-2 white hair. I'm quite worried. Can this be a symptom or is normal to have white hair for children at the age four.

I don't think there is a need to be worried because of a couple of white hair. It may be quite a normal phenomenon. In any event, there is not much to do in this age and worrying for no reason may cause YOU health problem. As said above, it is possible to cure vitiligo in many cases.

Hi Dr. Shmuel,
In tcm books the treatment for vitilago is tonifying blood, and yusing 7 star needle.
I've never heard the connction to bowel syndrums, and it makes sence.
Can you tell me the treatment for vitilago?
thanks

Mostly points belonging to the liver and colon. You need to treat according to a specific differentiation of syndromes in every case + tonify liver blood. B-25 and St-25 are of special value. Herbal tretment is also very effective in many cases and sometimes, even a single herb decoction such as Taraxacum may bring about a gradual cure.

I have an 8 year old son with vitiligo on his upper thigh. I am most interested in knowing how to control this - if possible - from spreading through out his body. He has had this spot on his leg since he was under 1 year. I live in Toronto. Can you advise me where to go or who to speak to with regards to any ideas.
Thank you

I can't refer you to anyone in Toronto Lora, but I know that there is a vast community of Ch. med. dr's practicing there. Try to locate someone with experience, if possible by recommendations of other patients. Vitiligo may be treated by both herbs and acupuncture.

I developed vitilago as a result of using a hydrocortisone cream around my eyes. I was prescribed the medication to treat a severe allergic reaction to an eye cream I had been using. I was out in the sun for a whole day and came home with big red circles around my eyes....which faded away taking all the colour with it. So I ended up with vitilago around my eyes. I've had several treatments over the last 10 years, including Chinese herbal medicines. I've also been using Ayurvedic medicines. They all helped a little, bringing out a few patches of colour, but still it looks very white and patchy. Please help me by giving me a good acupunturist here in Perth ,Australia. Do you think it will help?

Thanks for the contact....I wrote to Phil.....just waiting for a reply.
Have you ever heard of clinical research on Vitilago that took place at Gaurang Clinic and Centre for Ayurvedic Research in Lucknow in India....from 1996 to 2001? Just wondering if their claim to have a Vitilago Tab that cures or at least dramatically reduces the symptoms is actually true. Could you let me know your view? I'd like to know B4 I buy some of these tablets.

No Geetha I haven't heard about this Ayurvedic Research. I can tell you though something from my own experience about this skin problem. I once had a a girl patient of around 13 years old who suddenly developed Vitiligo and has had it for a year before seeing me. She couldn't come for acupuncture treatment so I advised her to prepare and drink Taraxacum decoction (pu gong ying/dandelion) which she could find readily at a local health food store. I advised her that because I have noticed a decrease in her liver functioning by palpating her pulse.
She has taken this decoction for a month or so and all the vitiligo stains have gone.
Just a story...
Hope Phil will get in touch with you soon.

He is a practitioner of Ch. med and can probably guide you as to who else you can turn to where you live. He also has a web site which probably includes more personal details:

I am an Australian practitioner, however I dont personally know anybody in perth, but you can check out any natural therapy association web site: Try AACMA (Australian acupuncture & chinese medicine association) I think its www.acupuncture.org.au or do a web search if thats not right, I always forget their address, or try ANTA (Australian Natural Therapist Association) www.anta.com.au or even ATMS which is www.atms.com.au.

I still haven't heard from Phil...I did check out his website, but there was no other contact.
In the meantime I managed to find some acupuncturists here in Perth. One of them told me he has seen his colleague treat a patient with vitiligo...so I have made an appointment to see this guy.
I was wondering also about this Taraxacum decoction.....is there any way I can check my own pulse to find out my liver function? My pulse rate is 70 beats per minute. Could you please tell me how to do it?
Maybe this decoction mught help me ....?
PS...thanks Lea for your help.

Checking pulse in Ch.med. is very different from how it is done in western medicine. It is a very sophisticated art and it takes many years of experience in order to perceive the subtle varieties of pulse qualities. It serves as the main tool of diagnosis in Ch. med. and you won't be able to palpate your own pulse and come to any conclusions.
In any event, I can see no harm if you take for a while a taraxacum decoction symptomatically. It should be starting to help you in a month time or so if it is going to help you at all.

Thanks so much Schmuel, for all your help and advice.
I had my 1st acupuncture session today....it could take some time, I know....but the acupuncturist said there's a good chance of significant improvement. If the colour comes back enough that it doesn't look so patchy, I'll be happy!
Congratulations on this forum.......I think it helps a lot of people.
