I have recently started some voluntary work with the homeless. I treat various ailments on a weekly basis thru Acupuncture. The topic of Detox came up tonight. Is there an overall 'influential' point or are there a series of points as well as treating the problem

Of course. Detoxification in general addresses the blood and liver. Excessive heat or fire toxin usually form what we call toxification. Hence, points that affect the purity of the blood and purge heat and fire are usually used in order to detoxify.
I usually use this combination:
Li-11/ Du-14/ B-15/ B-17/ B-40 = for the prone position.
Li-4/ Liv-3/ Sp-6/ Sp-10 = for the supine position.

Note that there are specific point combinations for detoxification of specific areas in the body. E.g., L-11 for the throat, H-8 for the bladder, P-7 for the mouth and heart area - and so on.

Needling techniques for detox are no less important than selecting the right point. Bleeding of points, blood-cupping and direct moxibustion are often applied in order to achieve better results.

Auricular acupuncture is also well worth considering with this section of the community & is often favoured over body points by many practitioners who regularly treat patients for addiction.
The NADA protocol probably being the best known points for detox: Shenmen, Sympathetic, Liv, Kid, Lung 1 &/or 2.(the first 3 can be used as a basis for any addiction with substance/organ specific points added as required). Needles should be retained for 40 mins minimum & can be used in addition to body points.

For alcohol abuse a good combination is: Liv, Endocrine, Zero, Alcohol, Mouth, Thalamus & Stomach
