Hello Shmuel!

I have been doing quite a bit of research in TCM lately, trying to pinpoint my problem. I went back to China a few weeks ago for a vacation and went to a TCM - they diagnosed me as qi and yang deficiency. I am fairly sure that this began around an year ago because I had a LOT of green smoothies back then, hurting my digestive system. I also still feel cold from time to time in my hands/feet.

I have recently began changing this (around 1-2 months ago) and now eat foods that are good for boosting spleen qi and such (eg. congees, meat + veggies COOKED, no raw foods)

I think that this weak digestive system is linked to my acne. I've had acne for awhile now, mostly on my cheeks. I think that the weak digestive system is causing heat to build in the upward region, while the qi from the food isn't being converted well. At least, that's my theory :-)

Can you confirm my suspicions/ guide me on the right path? Thanks :-)

In principle, you may be right. Acne may be differentiated in Chinese medicine according to the manifestation of the comedons (i.e., more damp than heat, or heat predominating, or Qi deficiency, etc.) and according to the general state of health. You may read about this in my article about acne on my web page. The digestive system is definitely involved in many patterns of the acne phenomenon. In Western medicine acne is considered mainly as a hormonal problem. This correlates well with the Chinese perception of acne which relates, in many cases, to the Chong mai, a vessel that involves both the kidneys (hormones, puberty) and the stomach meridian. Thus, if you adhere to the Chinese medicine solution of your problem, you may try both acupuncture and Chinese herbs by a Chinese doctor. This could definitely resolve your problem.

In terms of every day life, what should I be eating? I've looked online and followed some "spleen qi deficiency" type food choices, but that's about all. I have tried going to a TCM doctor but the herbal medicine hasn't helped that much.
Thanks!

Jeff, what you have read is probably right, however, eating according to spleen qi xu is not going to cure your acne. This is good in order to lead a correct "way of life" behavior in accordance with your spleen qi xu basic disharmony. In order to resolve your acne as well as your spleen qi xu state, you should receive appropriate treatment by a professional. Diet, might keep you on that track in order to sustain your health. In the case of acne, my personal adherence is acupuncture rather than herbs, but herbs could work well as well.
