Shmuel,
What do you know about polymyositis? I have one of my established patients (who hasn't been keeping up on his wellness visits) come in today and tell my his MD has diagnosed him with polymyositis. Is this like fibromyalgia (we don't know what's wrong with you so you have [catch-all disease])
Do you recommend cupping, bleeding, strict acupuncture, moxa?
Thanks,
Eric Waltemate D.C.

polymyositis is an inflammation of muscle fibers which causes pain and muscle weakness. In western medicine it is considered an auto-immune disease caused by WBC. In Ch. med. it is usually a bi syndrome, most likely to deteriorate into wei syndrome. The treatment is very difficult, not always producing an effective cure, unless "caught" at the very beginning of the disease and if the patient is young enough. In my experience treatment must be based in the long run on herbs, in order to support the Qi and clear the pathogen which is most often a damp cold or, less often, damp heat. Acupuncture treatment must follow the symptoms of the disease. I.E., focus on the areas of pain and stagnation, or muscular weakness and let the herbs (taken daily) to treat the core of the disease. In acupuncture treatment, you may use of course cupping, electricity, moxa, bleeding - whatever it takes to relieve the symptoms according to the clinical indications. In the herbal prescription, it is essential to assess which pathogen is predominant in relative differentiation and to administer the herbs accordingly.

Shmuel,
I asked you about this condition before I examined the patient. He seems to have kidney and liver yin deficiencies. He was blue/green/black around his eyes esp. lateral to them. When asked how he felt about this condition he groaned that he was mad about it "I'm only 28 years-old." (he didn't raise his voice but actually became more subdued than he already was.
I "summoned the 7 Dragons to chase out the demons" that he was dealing with since enlisting in the Marines (he witnessed a suicide of one of his fellow recruits at boot camp) and cleared his SI/UB and LI/ST blocks on his face through the horary cycle.
After the treatment his face became less blue/black and he could open a twist off bottle again.
I wrote this for posterity and to also ask what herbs you think would be good for this. Pulse: left: wiry, irregular; right: rapid, wiry; both weak. Tongue: slightly scalloped, whitish dry fur with slight yellow tint; body slightly red with red prickles on the tip; nails 5/5 moons and slightly ridged. Mu points all unremarkable.
What do you think?

It'll be highly non professional if I suggest herbal/acupuncture prescriptions without being able to examine the person myself. I am afraid I can't give you better advice than my previous post. If you have more specific questions I'll try to answer them.

No problem.
I hope I didn't overstep my bounds.
