Hello forum,
Chinese medicine maintains that low back pain and knee pain are symptoms of weak kidney Qi. Does anyone here can explain to me why and how pain in the back can signify weak kidneys?
Thanks, Pam.

In terms of 5 Element usage:
Water [K Yin] rules:
tissue - bone, marrow, joints, and therefore feet, knees and spine.
Weak K qi is almost synonymous with Weak K Yin.
UB channel in K Yin deficiency runs "empty", and invites Cold and Damp.
The sudden low back sprain is, even though presenting as a Full and Shi illness,
actually born of a K Yin Deficiency. A classical example of Empty masquarading as Full.
Although you have not asked this, a far more interesting conundrum is why did the K Yin Deficiency happen?
Possibilities are:
1. A Water on Water illness.
2. Metal mother not nourishing.
3. LV Wood son turning nasty and unfilial, and backing up into Water.
4. For some mad reason, Fire doing a somersault.
5. SP Earth Yin attacking.
The Nan-Ching spells out these in classical fashion in far more picturesque
parlance. The modus at 5. it calls "The Destroyer Evil". Almost certainly, the
pathology is this, and the real etiology of this kind of back pain a SP Yin Deficiency, leading to, as you will prefer it, a Ki Yin Deficiency, or a UB Excess, because

...and another explanation, not necessarily from the 5-elements theoretical point of view. K. Qi may be deficient due to hard physical labor, birth giving, hormonal medications, excessive sex, excessive cold beverages and food, as well as many other reasons, according to Chinese medical theories. The kidneys rule the lower back, the spinal cord, and the bones in general. Being deficient in energy, the muscles and ligaments of the lower back (especially) lack nourishment of Qi and blood. This gives rise to pain, strained muscles and susceptibility to the invasion of the wind and cold pathogens. If the kidneys remain deficient for longer periods of time, also the bones (skeleton) gets undernourished by Qi and blood. This results in osteoporosis, arthritic disorders and weakness of the knees. The knee symptom for K. deficiency is therefore not pain but, rather, weakness of the knees and inability to stand on one's feet for a long time.
