Shmuel, is there a special herbal formula that can boost children immunity? Especially problems such as frequent flu and viruses?
Thanx.

Yes, Miri, there are actually a few herbal formulas for this purpose. Most of them serve as a basic formula which need to be modified for the specific manifestations in each child. This can be done by any herbalist after a proper diagnosis. The most commonly used formula is perhaps: The Jade Windscreen Powder or Yu Ping Feng San. It is consisted of Astragalus, Lederbouriella and Atractylodis.

...and can be taken without a prescription, and without specific modifications? How long until you see results?

This formula is very safe, Miri, and may be taken without prescription, but without modifications as well. Modifications may be done only in order to tailor the prescription better to a specific individual. This formula is usually taken for prolonged periods of time, up to ½ a year or 1 year. It need be stressed, however, that taking the prescription is not enough. When there are symptoms of the cold or flu in your child, other herbal medications must be taken, or acupuncture, in order to release the pathogen and help the body recover. Helping the body recover in such a way (in contrast with antibiotics, for instance), also boosts the defense mechanisms of the body and helps in the long run. Only after the acute symptoms vanish, you may shift back to the Yu Ping Feng San powder. Also, diet is very important and there are specific foods that have the property of mildly tonifying the body's resistance such as ginger, stalk onions and more. Physical excercise, fresh air, behavioral adjustments... all paly important role as well.

hi shmuel,
I usually modify this formula . I add sha shen, xin yi hua, and cang er zi. Is cang er zi safe to be given to children for a long time ? How toxic is cang er zi ?
Also , usually this formula is given in large doses, what dose should be given to children( powdered herbs, or tincture ) ?
thanks
boaz

Boaz, as mentioned above, I personally prefer to leave this formula unchanged for the long run and use other formulas to treat episodes of acute nature. You may use Cang Er Zi San or Pe Min Kan Wan for the treatment of acute rhinitis or sinusitis for instance. After the episode has resolved, shift back to Yu Ping Feng San. Dosage for children is usually half the recommended dosage for adults. I prefer, whenever possible, to apply acupuncture in these acute cases, but you must be sure of your ability to resolve acute conditions with acupuncture. I don't think Cang Er Zi is toxic in any way after boiling or treating with intense heat.
