Treatment of recurrent episodes of streptoccocal inflammation by Ch.med. is very effective, usually yielding complete cure. The treatment is based not on the irradication of the bacteria (or virus) directly, rather on the elimination of its sympathizing habitat/dwelling (i.e., tonsils, bladder, etc.)

Dear Dr. Halevy,
my son is 3.5 years old.He has high fever for a week now but it comes and goes. He had a throat surfece check and it camw positive for streptoccoc A.
of course we were given antibiotics.
my question is should we take the antibiotics or can TCM handle the inflammation? what else can we use? chopsticks, herbs?
I would like to use the antibiotics as last option only .
I appreciate your help

I am very sorry for my late reply to this due to problems which I had with my computer (not streptococos though...). The answer, as odd as it may seem, is that acupuncture is in most cases more effective than antibiotics in the treatment of throat infections, including those caused by streptococos. The only handicap is that most western acupuncturists are not trained to deal with acute inflammatory conditions and they lack both the technique and confidence to take this challenge. Chopsticks acupuncture, in this case, is irrelevant. Herbal treatment is very effective, a little less than good-quality acupuncture in this case.
Hope this answers your question.

I would probably say take the antibiotics for an acute infection like that. Herbal medicine is useful, but the patient has to be very dedicated to taking them and the course of treatment can be longer than if you just take the course of antibiotics. I feel that a/bios are a wonderful medicine for those conditions where they are definitely indicated (not just prescribed to make people happy) and in this case they are. because of the overuse and abuse of them, people shy away from them when they can actually be helpfull.
I agree that acupuncture can be successful, as one of my acupuncture teachers had been sent to the countryside to practice as a young man in china in the 1950's and used acupuncture to good effect for many things that you wouldnt normally use it for as a first choice, simply because there were no other options.

I can add to this Lea that I have been treating infectious diseases for more than 25 years by acupuncture, including streptococal infections. Most people who came to me for this specific infection (including children of various ages) have been taking a/bios repeatedly without being able to finish this recurrent infection once and for all. I have also treated people who came for acupuncture treatment as a first choice for infectious tonsilitis. Success rate is 99%. I can't reacall even one failure in probably some hundreds of cases. Usually the pain and symptoms diminish in 1-3 consecutive sessions and the rest of the infection subsides in only a few more. Using acupuncture techniques that are prevalent in the western countries or Japan will not give you these results.

OK. I have to agree that there are resistant cases. My bad.
I would be very interested to hear some of the point combinations that you use for this type of thing. (If thats OK?)

The basic prescription that I usually use is:
Li-4/ 11/ Si-17/ L-11/ St-36 all in dispersion. The rest of the points according to my differential diagnosis.
