Hello dr. Shmuel,
long time.............
A mother called me and asked me if i could help her son. Her son was in a car accident ( 2 months ago ), and is paralized from chest down. there is no head injury. He can only move his arm a bit, I still don't know to what extent, since I havn't visited him yet.But I understood that his arm movement is farly good.
Anyway, she asked me if I can help, and I replied that it is worth a try.
I've had some experiance with stroke patients.
What can you suggest?
I was thinking of motor line scalp acupuncture, and yang ming pts. I obviously don't think I can make him run marathons, but if I can help get better hand movment, or even the other hand.....that will be great.
thanks alot
Boaz

At the initial stage, Boaz, traumatic paralysis may be cured in quite a number of patients. The younger the better, the sooner the better. It is quite different a condition than stroke though. You must employ points mainly of the Du Mai and especially those in the vicinity of the injury. Use other points that open and stimulate the Du Mai flow. Also point on the paralysed limbs can be utilized, but as secondary points. Stimulation must be strong and use plenty of moxa. Good luck.

Since it is a trama to the cervical vertebra, is it safe to use local du pts ? can using local du pts cause harm to a traumatzed vertebra. what about jia ji?
Since the patient is in bed it is hard to puncture the local Du, and retain the needles, can I use only stimulation or 7 star ?Will this be sufficient ?
thanks
Boaz

It is quite safe to use points such as Du-16/15 and 14 + Huato points. Just make sure to monitor the patient's reaction and act accordingly. Use warming moxa for a few minutes right after the insertion of the needles and after you have obtained Deqi. If the patient feels the heat penetrating through the needle, you may withdraw the needle as soon as it doesn't feel hot any longer. 7 star hammer is not effective in this case.

hi Shmuel,
I have treated this patient a few times and I would like to add a few more facts. His injury is at c-5, but it is not a complete tear, though his symptoms are. he is paralized chest down. his right hand can move but not the flex\ext of the fingers/ his left hand can move only from the shoulder.

I am using si-3 on the left only, co 4,11,15 bi lateral st-36 ( he can feel the needle sensation rediating down), gv-14,16 , huato jia ji C4,5,6
I also use scalp gv21-20 and motor line both sides.
Can you give more suggestions and tips for further treatment ( i am treating him 2 aweak)
Can you tell me what I can expect from such treatment. should emphasys be on restoring muscle contraction of the hand by using electro , or using gv/huato pts + moxa is most important.
Thank you for your time
boaz

I don't have much to add to my previous posts on this, except perhaps, that you need to work from the top of the body and downward. I.e., first use the huato and Du mai points on the nape, acquire a good Deqi radiating downward, then follow with points of the upper and lower limbs. Warming moxa can be used on the nape as well as on the limbs. Treatment must be carried out daily or at least every other day. Otherwise the stimulation is too weak. Since the blockage is at the level of the upper Du, emphasis must be directed at this area.

Dear Kaan, Chinese medicine is the best choice of treatment for such conditions. We use acupuncture in order to restore normal functioning of the nervous system and herbs in order to lower the B.P and regain normal functioning of the internal organs.
Just make sure to find for him an experienced practitioner.
