I had a call from a former patient ref: his hearing. He got a 'virus' approx 6 months ago. His hearing has deteriated by 50% since then in the ear effected. He has been told that at this rate of deteriation he will be deaf in a few years. Will Acupuncture be any use for this.

Dear Dave,
I have been an acupuncture practitioner, and have helped my fair share of people using acupuncture. The patient is still alive, the life force is still flowing, therefore acupuncture will help, and can be of great benefit.

Having said this, in my experience it is paramount to eliminate and neutralise any virus activity, by whatever means. It requires a practitioner or practitioners who can understand and work with this scenario.

It is best that a treatment plan be put together and followed. I can suggest one or two elements with a degree of certainty, distance and details not withstanding. The juice of 1.5 lemons per day, will definitely help liquify and eliminate those virus particles. The bowel and lung function should be attended to, is another piece of sage advice, and from a defintie acupuncture perspective, the kidneys need careful investigation.

Because this is an acupuncture forum, I dare say that someone else will get back to you with appropriate acupuncture advice.

In general, acupuncture is the modality of choice in almost every ear affliction, especially those caused by inflammation. This includes tinnitus, hearing loss, Menier syndrome and so on. The key point (pun...) with hearing loss is your patient's age which you didn't mention. I suppose he is not a child anymore - if it was so then your patient's chance of recovery had been very close to 100%. However, also grown-ups have usually a fair chance of improvement and recovery assuming they have commenced such a treatment close to the onset of the problem. Treatment of local points, such as Gb-2 with deep insertion is the key for clinical success in this case. Nevertheless, as Jan has mentioned, a thorough diagnosis is essential. Also warm needling is very beneficial, taken that you have diagnosed a cold (or Qi stagnant) condition underlying.
