I wish to post the following on a related Fibromyalgia query on acumedico.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge. I am writing to ask for your current awareness of Fibromyalgia (FMS). I have recently been diagnosed, however I believe I have had this illness for approximately 8 years.
I have heard that scientist Bernadette Snopek who was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (FMS) and researched it herself has come up with some hypothesis re what it is.
Snopek suggests that FMS may be considered an auto-immune disease known as Giant Cell Arteritis presenting in under 50 year olds.
She also suggests that FMS is is untreated Temporal Arteritis and Polymyalgia Rheumatica with a previously uncharacterised form of gout.
I do look forward to hearing your views re TCM's diagnosis and treatment of FMS and/or PMR, TA and gout.

Hi Marina,
Unfortunately Chinese medicine is unable to determine disease patterns in view of modern scientific hypotheses or even terminology. Chinese medicine has never concerned itself with anatomy as perceived today by modern science, and terms such as giant cells or the like are aliens to its methodology. Chinese medicine is concerned with physics rather than chemistry or anatomy. With flow of energy rather than electricity as understood by modern science. However, ancient and lacking modern science authorization as it is, despite all odds, it can still exhibit superior clinical success in dozens of medical problems that medical sciences of today can only dream of. Thus, Fibromyalgia may be interpreted in Chinese medicine as patterns involving impediments to the free flow of Qi and blood due to various causes, both external or internal (such as the weather or pent up emotions). These are being discussed extensively on the the internet and many books and there is no point of me giving a lecture about it on this forum. I suggest that you run a search on the internet about Chinese medicine and Fibromyalgia if this interests you and have a grasp about what Chinese medicine can offer in this regard. After you do that, and if you still have focused practical questions, I shall be very happy to offer my insight. |

Hi Maria,
I assume your query is of practical importance to you. As Shumel has said, CM is based on the cumulative observation of centuries. It does not seek to categorise diseases in such minute detail. Now what Acupuncture can offer is to continually balance the energetics of the body/psyche system throughout the life cycle. In the treatment of every disease it offers solutions because it works from first principles of balance of the 5 formative/evolutionary forces of the person. In a case that you describe, general treatment can be started immediately and refinements added based on the balace of the five pulses can be added. In acupuncture if you don't have a formula to assist the processs of healing, you invent one, based on working with first principles and not necessarily on an established diagnosis.
